The Thomas Jefferson High School girls soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against Kentlake on October 19, a result that significantly impacts their pursuit of a spot in the district tournament. After a run in the 2025 season that brought them close to the state tournament before a loss to Silas in districts, the Raiders aimed to make a stronger push this year. However, the recent tie places them in a challenging position as they contend for a playoff berth.

The game began with Thomas Jefferson showing strong form, an improvement from their previous 0-0 tie against Kentlake on September 21. Thomas Jefferson head coach Sdney Banyai noted the team's dedicated work on set pieces, a strategy that yielded an early advantage in the match.

In the 18th minute, sophomore Malieta Redmond delivered a precise cross from a corner kick. The ball found the head of senior captain Callie Moore, who successfully put it into the back of the net, giving the Raiders the lead. Coach Banyai described the execution of the play, highlighting Redmond's perfect ball placement and Moore's effective run, as "beautiful to watch."

Despite Thomas Jefferson's early lead and continued offensive pressure throughout the first half, Kentlake's goalkeeper Grace Engebo was instrumental in preventing further goals. Kentlake head coach Joe Grijalva commended Engebo's performance, acknowledging her as a standout player in the game.

The momentum shifted in the second half. Coach Banyai observed a decline in her team's energy, attributing it to a demanding schedule that included three games in the week. This apparent fatigue led to a less dominant performance from the Raiders after their strong first half.

Kentlake capitalized on this shift. Shannon Mclain, known as Kentlake's goal-scoring record holder, found more space after being moved to different positions on the field. Mclain successfully navigated through the defense and scored a goal, equalizing the score at 1-1. Coach Grijalva mentioned discussing a potential move for Mclain to defensive midfield shortly before her goal.

For much of the second half, the game was played predominantly on Thomas Jefferson's defensive side of the field. However, the Raiders' backline, composed of Moore, Jordynn Koria, and Claire Kaspersen, maintained a resilient defense against Kentlake's offensive pushes.

With only five teams qualifying for the postseason from the 3A NPSL this season, the draw carries significant weight for Thomas Jefferson. The Raiders are currently in sixth place with 19 points. Kentlake occupies the critical fifth and final playoff spot with 21 points, putting them two points ahead of Thomas Jefferson.

Coach Banyai emphasized the urgency facing her team, stating that if they do not push their hardest, their season could conclude prematurely, echoing a similar situation from the previous year. She indicated that the team understood the stakes and demonstrated a desire to compete, viewing the game against Kentlake as one of their better performances.

Both teams have three games remaining in the regular season. Thomas Jefferson is scheduled to play Decatur on October 21, the same day Kentlake faces Kent-Meridian. The point earned from the draw helps Kentlake maintain its lead over Thomas Jefferson in the standings as the season nears its conclusion.
