The Decatur High School volleyball team faced a tough opponent on September 30, ultimately falling 3-1 to Kentlake High School. The match saw the Gators, now with a 6-3 record, take the first set, but Kentlake (7-1) rallied to secure the victory. The game took place as Decatur sought to assert itself against a playoff-caliber team.

Decatur started strong, overcoming an early deficit to win the first set 25-23, even after trailing by three points late in the set. However, Kentlake responded forcefully in the second set, maintaining control throughout and never allowing Decatur to gain a lead. The Falcons decisively won the second set 25-14.

The third set proved to be a critical turning point in the match. Decatur initially brought the same energy that characterized their first-set win, establishing a 10-5 lead and extending it to 20-13. With momentum seemingly on their side, the Gators appeared poised to take the set. Despite the significant seven-point deficit, Kentlake's resilience began to show as they steadily closed the gap, point by point. Senior Kaylee Futch commented on her team's composure, stating, "Our maturity level is up to the ceiling and that helps us play calm and collected in those times."

Kentlake’s comeback continued, reducing Decatur’s lead from seven points, to four, then to two, before eventually tying the score at 24-24. The Falcons ultimately won the hard-fought third set 26-24, effectively shifting the momentum of the game.

Grace Keith, a senior, described the strategy during the rally: "We kept a one point at a time mentality." She added that focusing on smaller goals helps when facing large deficits. Following this pivotal comeback, Decatur struggled to generate sufficient offense to threaten Kentlake in the final set. Kentlake players Mesgana Petros and Yvie Nimmons were noted for their offensive performance in dissecting the Decatur blockers.

Kentlake maintained control throughout the fourth set, securing a 25-16 victory. Though the Gators demonstrated a scrappy effort, they could not close within three points of the Falcons in the final set.

The Kentlake team is senior-heavy in the 2026 season, with eight of their fourteen players in their final year. This long-standing camaraderie is a key factor the team relies on during challenging matches. Keith noted that many players have been playing together since middle school, creating a strong bond. She stated, "We have a very play for the person next to you mentality, we are that is one of the reason we are the team that we are."

Looking ahead, Kentlake aims to reach the state tournament this year, a goal they have not achieved since 2021. Last season, Kentlake was the eighth seed in the district tournament and lost both of its matches, failing to advance to state. Futch expressed optimism about their prospects: "I am so excited. I think that we can go very far in our season, hopefully to state that is our goal." The Falcons are scheduled to host Todd Beamer for their next NPSL contest on October 6.
