Federal Way's Decatur High School volleyball team faced Kentlake High on September 30, with Kentlake ultimately securing a 3-1 victory after dropping the initial set. The match showcased significant swings in momentum, particularly during a pivotal third set that saw Kentlake overcome a substantial deficit.

Decatur, holding a 6-3 record at the time, aimed to assert itself against the playoff-caliber Kentlake team, which entered the match with a 7-1 record. The Gators started strong, overcoming an early Kentlake lead to win the first set 25-23, signaling a competitive contest.

However, Kentlake responded forcefully in the second set. The Falcons controlled the play from the outset, preventing Decatur from ever establishing a lead. This dominant performance resulted in a 25-14 victory for Kentlake, evening the match at one set apiece.

The turning point of the game occurred in the third set. Decatur recaptured its initial energy, building a commanding 10-5 lead and extending it further to 20-13. With this seven-point advantage, the Gators appeared poised to take the set and carry momentum into the fourth. Despite the challenge, Kentlake's resilience began to show, as they steadily closed the gap. Senior Kaylee Futch noted the team's high level of maturity, which helped them maintain composure during critical moments. Kentlake chipped away at Decatur's lead, bringing it from seven points down to four, then two, eventually tying the score at 24-24. Employing a strategy of focusing on "one point at a time," as described by senior Grace Keith, Kentlake successfully completed the comeback, winning the set 26-24 and seizing the momentum.

Following Kentlake's decisive third-set victory, Decatur struggled to generate sufficient offensive pressure in the final set. Kentlake maintained control, with players like Mesgana Petros and Yvie Nimmons effectively navigating Decatur's blockers. The Falcons secured the fourth set 25-16, with the Gators unable to get closer than three points, sealing Kentlake's overall 3-1 match win.

Kentlake's roster for the 2026 season is notably senior-heavy, with eight of its 14 players in their final year. This long-standing team cohesion is a key factor in their ability to perform in challenging matches. Keith described a team mentality centered on supporting each other, noting that many players have been together since middle school, creating a collective drive for success in their final season.

Looking ahead, Kentlake aims to reach the state tournament, an achievement they have not realized since 2021. Last season, the team was the eighth seed in the district tournament but lost both of its matches, failing to advance further. Futch expressed excitement for the team's potential, stating that they hope to progress far into the season and reach their state goal, thriving in what she called a "really great environment."

Kentlake's next competition will be a National Puget Sound League (NPSL) contest, where they are scheduled to host Todd Beamer on October 6.
