The annual Taste of Federal Way recently concluded, drawing local residents to the new Civic Plaza Lawn for a culinary journey through past decades. The event celebrated a range of local food establishments and community partnerships, culminating in awards for exceptional cuisine, presentation, and community engagement. Mama Stortini’s received the most prestigious honor as the 1st Place Overall winner by judge’s choice. The proceeds generated from the popular community gathering are designated to be split three ways, benefiting the participating restaurants, various local nonprofit organizations, and the City of Federal Way itself, reflecting the event's commitment to local support and civic life.
Mama Stortini’s was awarded the top prize for 1st Place Overall (Judge’s choice), recognized for their Chop Salad and Bruschetta. This success was a result of their partnership with Do The Right Thing. Attendees also cast their votes, selecting East India Grill as the People’s Choice winner for their distinctive Mango Chicken Curry with Basmati Rice, presented in collaboration with St. Vincent de Paul School. Visual appeal was also celebrated, with Poverty Bay/FUSION earning the Best Decorated award for their highly detailed 1980s-themed booth. Beyond the culinary and decorative categories, the Rotary Club of Federal Way demonstrated strong community support by achieving the Most Ticket Sales award, an effort undertaken in partnership with Jimmy Mac’s Roadhouse.
The atmosphere at the new Civic Plaza Lawn transported attendees through time, with decorations that moved "from the Roaring 20s to the Neon 80s." This retro styling set the stage for an engaging day filled with "good food, good tunes." While the large crowd and judge’s panel queued up for their various selections, they were serenaded by the local band The Lost & Found, whose live music further enhanced the festive and nostalgic environment of the annual gathering.
The full menu offered a diverse array of tastes for every palate. Among the savory options, Swagg-n-Wagon partnered with Knights Baseball Club to offer Party Wings and Waffle Fries, providing a popular choice for many. Jimmy Mac’s Roadhouse, known for its collaboration with the Rotary Club, also served its signature Turkey Ciabatta to guests. Poverty Bay, whose FUSION partnership secured the best decorated booth, also provided comforting Housemade Biscuits and Sausage Gravy. For those seeking something sweet, Sub Zero, Nitrogen Ice Cream was on hand with dessert options. Hydration was also considered, with water provided by We Love Our City throughout the event.
The financial structure of the Taste of Federal Way underscores its multi-faceted contribution to the community. By splitting the event's proceeds three ways—among the participating restaurants, the collaborating nonprofit organizations, and the City of Federal Way—the event serves as a significant fundraiser and a direct source of support for local businesses and community initiatives. This model reinforces the event's role in fostering economic vitality and charitable endeavors within Federal Way.
