Federal Way High School is celebrating the athletic accomplishments of two of its students, senior golfer Andrew Lettice and sophomore cross country runner Maya Wentworth, who have been named Athletes of the Week. This recognition, effective October 23, spotlights their recent successes and contributions to their respective sports programs within the Federal Way Public Schools system. The announcement was made on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, by Benjamin Ray, highlighting the athletic excellence fostered at Federal Way High.
Andrew Lettice has distinguished himself as the Player of the Year for the NPSL 3A Division, a significant honor in high school golf. His exceptional skill was further demonstrated at the NPSL 2-day tournament, where he secured a victory by shooting an impressive 3-under par, culminating in a total score of 141 strokes. A particular highlight of his performance was his first-day score, an outstanding 5-under par 67, which set the tone for his tournament win. Lettice articulates a deep connection to his school, stating, “I love being a FW Eagle and representing the school.” He attributes this pride to his family, noting that his mother, who also attended Federal Way High School, "passed down the pride and tradition" of being an Eagle. Beyond his individual performance, Lettice embraces his role as team captain. He defines being a good teammate as actively “checking up with each teammate and helping them.” In his capacity as captain, he sees himself as “like another coach,” focused on assisting his teammates in achieving success on the golf course.
Maya Wentworth has likewise achieved considerable success in cross country. As a sophomore, she recently captured the individual All-City Championship, a testament to her personal endurance and speed. Furthermore, Wentworth played a pivotal role in her team's success, pacing the girls' squad to an All-City Overall Championship. This achievement builds upon her prior experience competing at the State level as a freshman, indicating consistent high performance throughout her high school career. Wentworth expresses that “being able to represent Fed means a lot to me.” She explains that this sense of representation provides her with a strong motivation “to be on the start line and compete to the best of my ability.” When considering what it means to be a good teammate, Wentworth emphasizes “showing up for your teammates when they need it,” highlighting the importance of mutual support within the team.
Both Lettice and Wentworth share an admiration for prominent figures in the world of sports. When asked to name their top four athletes, their combined “Mount Rushmore” includes golf legends Scottie Scheffler and Tiger Woods, football icon Cristiano Ronaldo, and basketball star Kobe Bryant. These choices reflect a breadth of appreciation for athletic prowess across different disciplines. The recognition of these two students serves to underscore the dedication and talent present within Federal Way High School's athletic programs, celebrating not only their competitive achievements but also their leadership and commitment to their teams. This type of local recognition is vital for highlighting the positive contributions of young people to the Federal Way community.
