Federal Way families engaged in a distinctive autumnal tradition as the third annual Pumpkin Plunge returned to the Federal Way Community Center on Oct. 17. This popular event transformed the center’s recreational waters into a unique seasonal playground, inviting local kids and their families to "unlock the fun" by swimming alongside and bobbing around with big orange pumpkins in the indoor pool. Following their time in the water, participants had the opportunity to select a pumpkin to take home, thereby securing a future Jack O’Lantern for their own carving festivities.

The Pumpkin Plunge has swiftly become a supremely popular event on Federal Way’s fall calendar, drawing significant community interest in its third iteration. The concept was introduced to the city by Federal Way’s Aquatics Coordinator, Jake Pyatt. Pyatt brought the original idea with him from Arizona, noting its success and appeal in a different climate, and expressed his satisfaction with the local execution of the event, stating, "Being able to do this is awesome." The recent plunge on Oct. 17 was carefully managed, with three distinct 90-minute sessions scheduled throughout the day. To ensure an enjoyable and organized experience for all attendees, families were required to reserve their spots in advance, a testament to the event's growing popularity and the community's desire to participate in such a unique local offering.

The event’s namesake, the pumpkins themselves, were sourced with local considerations in mind. A total of 210 pumpkins were specifically provided for the Plunge by Double R Ranch, a local supplier located in Auburn. Each pumpkin destined for the aquatic adventure underwent a meticulous preparation process; they were carefully picked and subsequently cleaned before being introduced into the Federal Way Community Center’s warm aquatic area. Once prepared, these large, vibrant orange pumpkins were gently "plopped" into the inviting waters, ready for interaction.

Children and families made full use of the various features within the community center’s indoor pool environment. The "lazy river" current channel became a favorite spot for playful interaction, with pumpkins gently drifting alongside swimmers. The swirling waters of the whirlpool also offered a dynamic setting for engaging with the floating gourds. Even the more structured lap lanes saw pumpkins being playfully maneuvered by participants. The aquatic play unit and its accompanying splash area provided additional zones for younger children to enjoy the unique experience. Observers noted the evident joy and excitement among the children, with one girl particularly observed floating through the lazy river with two pumpkins, highlighting the freedom and engagement the event fostered. The Pumpkin Plunge offers Federal Way residents a distinctive and memorable way to celebrate the autumn season, blending aquatic fun with traditional fall festivities, and reinforcing community connections at a local hub.
